TRIBUTE TO THIERRY MUGLER
The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode pays tribute to Thierry Mugler who passed away this Sunday, January 23.
Visionary designer, Thierry Mugler, revolutionized the history of French fashion. He became an independent designer at the age of 26 and signed his first personal collection in 1973, called Café de Paris. In 1990, he produced his first collection under the auspices of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Throughout his career, the precursor has shaken the codes of fashion, mixing creativity, know-how and impertinence with brio. Thierry Mugler is at the origin of the first fashion shows open to the public. Photographer, director, perfume designer, Thierry Mugler was a complete and monumental artist.
The exhibition “Couturisime” will continue to pay tribute to the designer until April 24 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
“Thierry Mugler is part of this generation of “fashion designers” of the 70’s and 80’s who revolutionized the ready to wear. Thierry Mugler is notably at the origin of the power dressing, a wardrobe intended to dress this new generation of women claiming to be the equal of men. Thierry Mugler was one of the first designers from the ready-to-wear world to join the very closed circle of haute couture and his perfume Angel was a dazzling success. I also have fond memories of his fashion shows at the Zenith or at the Cirque d’hier, open to thousands of spectators. We can’t dissociate him from Didier Grumbach, my predecessor, who detected his talent very early on and was the man who, with Michel Douard, built the Thierry Mugler house” says Ralph Toledano, President of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode.
“Thierry Mugler is 20 years of my professional life. A major designer who has undoubtedly marked his era and greatly contributed to changing the profession both in the way of making fashion and showing it. In 1992, he was the first ready-to-wear designer to be “invited” to the Haute Couture calendar. For his fashion shows, he designed everything with care, the sets, the staging, the music.
