Ro Tajima is a Japanese editor and media executive, best known as Editor-in-Chief of BRUTUS and an Executive Officer at Magazine House, one of Japan’s foremost publishing companies. Born in Saitama in 1974, he joined Magazine House in 1997 and was assigned to BRUTUS the following year, where he spent nearly two decades helping to shape the magazine’s editorial vision. After serving as Deputy Editor-in-Chief and later Editor-in-Chief of Hanako, Tajima returned to lead BRUTUS in December 2021, overseeing both its print and wider media expansion. Under his stewardship, the title continues to define contemporary culture across fashion, art, travel and lifestyle while maintaining its iconic status in Japanese pop culture.

What excites you in fashion right now?

Recently, many brands such as Dior, Gucci, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Celine and Chanel have gone through changes in creative leadership. Yet all of them have presented strong, creativity-driven collections. That genuinely excites me, it feels as though there are still countless possibilities for new forms of expression ahead.


 

What is one reason to be optimistic about the state of fashion going forward?

New forms of expression, new creative voices and new pairings between designers and brands continue to emerge. As long as this cycle, in which something new keeps coming into the world, remains active, there is little reason for pessimism.


 

What do you enjoy most about Paris Fashion Week?

Being able to witness, firsthand, just how many people genuinely love fashion.


 

Do trends still matter?

Rather than trends themselves, what matters far more is understanding what truly suits one’s own personal style.


 

What are the main elements that make fashion magazines still relevant?

Media that consistently documents fleeting elements such as the atmosphere and the mood of a given time is essential. Fashion magazines capture specific moments, and over time they become irreplaceable and invaluable archives.


 

What aspect of your work is most fulfilling?

No matter your age, there are always places you have never been and people you have never met.


 

What is your favourite way or word to compliment someone’s style?

Charming!


 

In what ways is AI helping you develop and realise ideas that might not have been previously possible?

Through the speed of research and the support in achieving more accurate fact-checking. These tools assist human creativity both before and after the creative process.


 

There seems to be more overlap between fashion/entertainment and fashion/sports than ever. Thoughts?

Flows and systems in which different genres intersect and move beyond their traditional boundaries are not unique to fashion. What truly matters is whether this process generates work of real quality and creations that deserve to endure over time.
